Growing Power – Highlights and Lessons Learned

When: Friday, October 21 from 2:30-5:30 pm

Where: Toronto City Hall on October 21 from 3:00 to 5:00 in committee room 4.

What: Will and Erika Allen, two leaders of Growing Power, an inspiring Milwaukee-based model for integrating environmental and social sustainability through food security leadership training, will be speaking at Toronto City Hall on October 21 from 3:00 to 5:00 in committee room 4.

This is the full package of environmental and social leadership through the growing power of urban agriculture, enhanced by two amazing personalities. Will, a former professional basketball player, has just won a major Ford Foundation award for lifetime achievement in community leadership. His daughter, Erika, is an accomplished artist who coordinates urban agriculture outreach programs in Chicago.

Growing Power may well shoot its roots over to Toronto, so innovators will want to hear what Will and Erika have to say about the lessons learned through their work: the theme of their Friday talk. There will be lots of time for questions and discussion. It’s expected that a representative from City Council will participate in the dialogue.

The meeting is sponsored by FoodShare, the Toronto Food Policy Council, and Food For Talk, a group of university and community activists committed to creating opportunities for great public discussions about food.

Don't miss this unique opportunity to hear Will and Erika Allen during their first visit to Toronto.

This is part of the series Food For Talk. See below for a complete listing of the series' events.

Terminator News

The Terminator warned, "I'll be back!," and the Gene Giants, in
cooperation with governments, are rolling out the red carpet. Once
again, genetic seed sterilization technology is threatening the
12,000-year old tradition of farmers saving, adapting and exchanging
seed and the 1.4 billion people who depend on farm-saved seed as
their primary seed source. ETC Group urges you to participate in the
global BAN TERMINATOR campaign (see website). Support is particularly
critical in advance of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity
meetings in Spain and Brazil early next year, where Terminator is on
the agenda. Let's terminate Terminator, once and for all!

Read more about how to take action to stop the terminator's takeover of agriculture at the Ban Terminator website:http://www.banterminator.org/
