Job Opportunity for Youth (15-30)

FoodShare Toronto, with support from Human Resources Skills Development Canada, has 14 positions for youth in a 6-month long paid internship program beginning September 26, 2005 and ending February 10, 2006.

If you are interested in a multi-faceted work environment, we will train you to work in our food distribution warehouse, as well as either our kitchen or our urban agriculture program.  You will learn about nutrition and cooking, how the food system works, and food security issues in Toronto.  You also are committed to participate in lifeskills sessions.

To qualify you must be between the ages of 15-30, unemployed, and have had difficulty finding long term employment in Canada.  You must be eager to work and learn in a team environment.

Application Process:

  • Come to an orientation session to meet the staff and have your questions answered.
  • Spend a day packing Good Food Boxes on either Tuesday, September 6th,  13th, or 20, 2005 at 200 Eastern Ave.
  • Schedule a personal interview after completion of a packing day.

FoodShare Job Opportunities: Focus on Food Program Facilitators

FoodShare Toronto is looking for an individual or individuals to work in our Focus on Food Youth Program. The Focus on Food program provides job experience for youth 15-30 currently unemployed and who have had difficulty finding long-term employment in Canada. Focusing on life skills, employment search, and practical day to day experiences in our warehouse, kitchen and urban agriculture programs, participants will also be provided with information about nutrition and the food system.

There are three part time positions available, which can be combined into one or two positions, depending on applicants’ skills. The positions are Urban Agriculture Youth Program Facilitator, Kitchen Youth Program Facilitator, and Focus on Food Program Facilitator. Applicants are encouraged to apply for as many positions as they are interested in and qualified for. Please submit one resume and covering letter. At the top of the covering letter list the positions that you are applying for.

Qualifications:

  • Experience working with youth
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to people with a diversity of experiences including ethnic and economic diversity, physical and mental health issues, and sexual orientationStrong interpersonal and communication skills, including conflict resolution
  • Ability to be flexible and take on tasks as needed
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Teaching experience, social work background, and ability to speak other languages all assets

Focus on Food Program Facilitator, 2 days a week

Responsibilities:
  • Organize life skills field trips and speakers
  • Connect youth to employment centers
  • Carry out basic administrative tasks
  • Occasional warehouse work
  • Qualifications:
  • Excellent organizational abilities
  • Familiarity with community resources in Toronto

Urban Agriculture Youth Program Facilitator, 1.5 days a week

Responsibilities:
  • Work with the Urban Agriculture Coordinator to develop new projects
  • Work with the youth to run urban agriculture projects
  • Organize visits with the youth to other growing projects in the city
  • Qualifications
  • Demonstrated growing abilities
  • Knowledge of organic and sustainable agricultural practices
  • Experience in Greenhouse, composting, bee keeping, sprouting

Kitchen Youth Program Facilitator, 1.5 days a week with a potential for additional hours for applicants with teaching experience


Responsibilities

  • Supervise youth in preparing meals
  • Take and prepare catering orders
  • QualificationsFormal chef training or apprenticeship or work equivalent experience
  • Previous training in kitchen health and safety
